I installed the game and then the Patch.
Game loads half-way then crashes to XP desktop. Without the patch it seems to work ok with only a few random crashes. It does this on both my XP boxes. Athlon XP, newest drivers Geforce 4 MX, bla bla bla.
Also the install was rough: many errors so I had to switch CD drives.
I have heard many suggestions on this forum about reinstalling and rebooting many times as well as people actually partioning their hard-drive to run in another OS.
Ridiculous!
Crappy over-zealous work on the part of the game developers is what it is. There should not be so many problems.

I like the game alot and I guess will continue to play without the patch or until tech support sends me a reply. I think it is hopeless though until the next patch.

Thanks

Hey man the same happened to me, amazing huh? Try to use 16 bit color in your video card configuration, this worked for me in a short time, something like two weeks, after this my game returned to crash to xp desktop, now i'll reinstall it and try other things.

i tried 16 bit already.
I get an error installing the patch. So that seems to be the problem. I don't have anything running like virus stuff or admin privlidge problems.

I suspect the problem is with the install itself. It is missing some files, but tells you all is installed anyway. The patch then gives you an error because it cannot find certain files.

are you using a download manager for the patches?

and this also from DAD....

Do you smoke?
The last question is not a joke at all, because you shall be surprised to know that if you do smoke then clean your CD lens every day, and I mean every day, because the freaking technology cannot tolerate nicotine skin on lens; use 99% ethyl alcohol on the tip of an ear cleaner and you shall be very happy thence after.

I would suggest a total re-install...
and re-download another patch....
the one you got,
may have "picked" something up on it's way to you......

I think that is a good suggestion:
re-downloading patch. I will try this.
"Smoke". very interesting. Though it just came out of the box. The game copy protection is one major fault for sure. Very over-cautious and stupid idea. Especially if done by amatuers with little end-user testing. I could understand if it was a shitty game, but its not. It's quite nice. They need to test cds on LG players. They are the most succeptible to hiccups.
Not any smoke here, but lots of beer spilling going on.

I had the same problem, so I did everything that was suggested in the tech info page. I then reinstalled the game and the patch and it seems to be working fine.

Nothing mentioned on this forum or on any links seemed to work.
I did reinstall the game and it went to a folder called "programme" German for Program Files I suppose. I then installed the new patch.
It works!
What's goin on here. I wonder if the manual install (which did not work either somehow did something)
The full install I did was from the CD though.
Could there be a problem in Windows XP and the "program files" folder. I'm not going to go back and test though.
Any ideas?
Works and no crashes!

@thonuz: I think that the patch got corrupted while downloading. Not sure though... but this does happen - very rarely, but it does.
Glad that your game is playing fine now and have fun!

If you did not edit the registry file from CDV when you did the manual install, it would add the install path as 'c:\Programme\Divine Divinity' to the registry, which appears to be what the subsequent install used for the default path. Not sure why that would help.....

I downloaded the registry thing I think. Can't remember anymore.
It might be that i re-downloaded the patch. My bet is on the install, that I got some files that were missing earlier and thus let the patch find its place.

I'm happily playing now with no crashes.
Now if only I could find the key to my belongings in this damn cellar.

Thanks for all your suggestions earlier.
