The order of events is normally this.

- Arrive at Last Light Inn
- Talk to Rolan
- Marcus attacks
- Rolan's gone off to find his family
- Go toward the Toll House and you'll see him there fighting shadows (save him when you do)
- He'll go back to Last Light Inn
- Save his Family at Moonrise Towers prison
- Talk to the three of them at Last Light Inn

I've seen a few iterations of bugs occurring with this.

- Marcus or his gargoyles kill Rolan in the attack on Isobel
- You rescue his family before the events of Last Light Inn entirely (Triggers his quest even though his family is safe)
- It's not a bug however if you go looking for him after the Last Light Inn attack and also after you rescue his family as he'll have been unalived by that point in the Shadow Curse. You have to save him before you save his family it seems.

Alfira and Bex will not have any impact on the Rolan storyline (though each of them has a partner you can rescue at Moonrise in addition to Rolan's family).

As for whether it's worth it, that depends on your definition. Rolan reaches a critical growth point as a character in Act 3 and from what you've written I think you're doing a good playthrough so this will apply (if you're doing an evil playthrough disregard). Not going to spoil it but it's pretty profound if you do a good aligned playthrough. If you are interested in his character and want to see his arc come to a meaningful conclusion, it isn't a waste of time. He's one of the better written characters of the game (and most characters are well written). Pretty cathartic for sure. Just make sure that if you want to see the optimal outcome, you do need to rescue his family in addition to rescuing him, and also very important is you need to make sure the Nightsong is not destroyed or taken.
