One of the issues with making an RPG is finding a game system that fits the mold of your creative idea. For a software gaming company that is a mess as many of the really great ideas are used so you run the whole risk of the IP infringement. There is an IP out there that has never gotten any love that would fit a computer RPG really well, Dangerous Journeys. The system was developed by Gygax as a replacement to DnD and uses a skill based system rather than class. This is a perfect fit for computer gaming in my opinion. The system is wide open and has no defined lore (well sort of they initially did an off look at the real world) This means a developer could have a drop in system, develop their own game world around it and still get a name like Gygax to tie to it.
Not sure who currently owns the IP but cannot imagine anyone that does would hit hard on royalties since there is nothing out there.
