Imagine my surprise when me, having romanced Gale the entire game, got the "Whelp, nice knowing you, I'm off to be a god now!"
Turns out there was a specific boat scene that never triggered for me that would have given me the checks for a happy ending, but instead, I got to kiss him pre-battle, and immediately after he just went into full asshole mode. It was whiplash to be sure.
I have found that in order to trigger this boat scene, you MUST
long rest after you speak to Elminster in Camp (when he appears to you after finding the Karsus book), and before you go to the statue of Mystra. If you go straight to the statue and allow Gale to speak to Mystra right after talking to Elminster, you will not get the scene.
