Hey. Hey,

the game is simply amazing (I have more than 100 hours and I am vanilla BG player), but I've run into a few problems, and one of them is the map.

The map is terrible.

- There is a complete lack of location previews. I never know where I'm gonna port. The only thing we know is the name of the location, which is (I think) sorted by the time of discovery.
- Quests don't show up on the map. I often get transported somewhere and don't know where to go.
- Merchants are not displayed. Nothing is displayed at all, just the name of the location.
- I can't switch between map levels, which is terrible especially in the third act in the city.
- Clicking on the minimap is unresponsive. I can't move around the city by clicking on a location. this often leads to wandering. Especially when my computer is weaker and not all textures render or it takes a long time and it crashes.

Recommendation:
- Individual areas should have their own toggle map. So if I'm in Lover city, I need to be able to switch to a channel and view the map.
- Each quest should be properly displayed on the map when it appears and NOT MISSED. I load the game and the quest is not on the map. Then it is. Then it's not. I often run around the map completely blind.
- discovered traders should be permanently displayed on the map
- Add the ability to filter "items" on the map. E.g. show only merchants. Show only tasks. Show only teleports. Show all
- enable movement and navigation through the minimap

I have many other little things, but this would be enough to start with and then tweak it.

Also, I may have hit a bug where I can see the quest in the journal and the localization option on the map. I click on it and nothing.

I have many thoughts here, cause I love maps! It's kinda my whole thing hehe. I think map feedback might have been my first feedback post here on the BG3 boards.

To me the main maps need work. Currently the mini-map is a glorified compass and the area maps are like a super zoom on that same compass.

To function as a map it needs to communicate more information at a glance and allow us to key off relevant information. Also so the player can choose how 'foggy' they want their information to be on this count, meaning options to remove stuff from the key if the player doesn't want that information, as well as ways to minimize the mini completely and not have that affect the UI functionality for other stuff.

Going back to the basic basic, the Character planchettes and lines of sight could be much more clearly indicated with more option to color code/pattern code that visual information.

Area maps could work with the mini/area maps to key off what's actually in the field of view (the playable area) in a way that clearly indicates distance and the space being occupied (paths being travelled currently, or already travelled) in such a way that makes those previews useful to the gameplay, and then also to work with the journal/questlog in similar.

Things like area elevation, doors and ladders and bridges, environmental obstacles like pits, blocked paths or areas which cannot be accessed like mountains and such. Area transitions, waypoints, "let me add it to your map convo options from NPCs" these could all be given more variety in the graphics used to key all that info. The mini would be harder, trying to do something volumetric in a space that small is challenging, but the area zoom enlargement on that could offer more I think.

We do have a way to add markers to the map, but I feel like this is just not a terribly useful feature.

I love the world map, though that's not really what we're talking about here I don't think. Still lets admire it anyway hehe

Now that's great! Love that one! But I think we're talking more about the mini and the area zooms right?

The BG3 wiki doesn't have a full collection of these yet, only for the walkthroughs in early areas, Fextra had a few more. Map Genie actually has some of the better maps I think right now

Here's a view on the Nautiloid

Here's one for the first Act (spoilers) when you click into it, use the mouse wheel to zoom/in out and you'll see a better display. Zoom in to expand the key there.

And then here's a simple view single elevation key

Basically something more like that natively, but then adding to an elevation breakdown. Bonus points if they can somehow make cartography a gameplay skill too with hand drawn maps for a Candlekeeper angle on that.

We have Volo, this could be part of the reason he's staying with us in camp, so we can help him map it all out heheh

Eyes on the prize!

+1 to everything Black_Elk said.

The lack of an ability to track and untrack quests on the map is insane and makes the mini map useless. I can’t tell you how much time I spent fast traveling back to a waypoint, start heading toward a quest trying to use the maps, only to realize I’m heading in the wrong way. I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out how to get into Raphael’s room at the brothel because there’s zero indication of elevation, stairs, or entrances on the map.
