There are items to discover upstairs, that will advance the quest. Considering the volatile nature of the rooms contents they may no longer be there if you hadn't found them prior to a combat encounter. Addition information can be found in the basement/cellar. Still, that does not ensure the journal entry will complete. I have no idea why that may be. It has completed and not done so for me
