As cosmopolitan WotC, and by extension Larian has pushed DnD, I think you will get your “Demons and Ogres are people too!” wish. But not today. They are not *that* far off just having different species being any more then a graphical skin as it is. Ogres, half-ogres, orcs, hobgoblins and even demons probably are not far off.

There was a time when a Teifling or Drow getting a league within a major city would summon a small detachment to figure out what in the nine hells was going on. Because 99.8% of the time, it probably wasn’t good and throwing them into a cell was the right call to make. Had to be a good player to tabletop RP one of those.

Nowadays? More modern allegory and less world distinction.

Think you will have to live with mods for now. Ogres are still big, strong, non-charismatic (important for locks and sorcerers) dummies for players to beat and to beat on. The moment you make them selectable from the get go you begin to humanize them. Fantasy species differentiation becomes conflated with human ethnicity and cultural concerns. Those defining traits have to be removed or seriously curtailed and those species made more generic.

At that point your just playing another 5e skin job with a big character model, but they are not ready to normalize those creatures just yet.
