Gyldro Angleiron was
one of possible Orin shapeshifting targets.
But when she's gone, the real one appears with head injury.

Somewhere between a long rest and getting rid of Orin, his dead body just appears in Bhaal temple. Leaving his assistant/fangirl quite sad.

Is there no way to save him?

Orin expects you to kill him because she shapechanged as you when she attacked him, she's upset when you don't and kill him herself. You'll find his body, and some of the others she doppeled in the temple to Bhaal later. I don't think you can save him. Even persuading him to believe he was attacked by a Doppleganger doesn't do it

this feels like he was planned to be something more but it was scrapped last minute. in his house you can find gyldro's diary and letters where you can see how he failed to find himself a spouse, and the dragonborn girl in the shop is clearly in love with him. i was sure that there will be a quest to set them up, and all you need to do was somehow prevent him from dying. alas

Under the conditions you describe, there is also a note. Reading it should answer your question. I do not believe the note disappears so you should be able to return and read it without loading a previous save.

It makes sadly perfect sense for a destroyed mind like Orin's. I was sad, when I saw him there. My second Iron imposter was the dying Stone lord rogue, so that one was ok, since he would have died anyway.

As Spiral_Architect says, there should be a note that makes it clear what happened and I agree with fylimar that this both made sense and was very sad. Definitely one of the moments that packed an emotional punch for me.

Oh yes, especially, since the smith seems to be a bit grumpy, but not a bad person and his co worker, the very happy dragonborn lady (who btw is so wholesome) will probably be sad. I hope, she wasn't too shocked, when she did go looking for him and he wasn't there anymore.
Same with that very enthusiastic reporter, I'm glad , I didn't have her as Orin yet.
I had the racist soldier though, and I 'm not sure if that racism was just Orin messing with us or if the guy really was that unpleasant.
