I've had this same issue. Game would freeze when sorting by type and I'd lose tons of time sorting/selling items. In my case, I did have a container inside my traveler's chest with a huge number of books in it (like 300+) and when I moved that container to another traveler's chest in my camp (one that doesn't receive items from using "send to camp"), the crashing seemed to have stopped for the most part. Was very frustrating for a while.
