First, I still love this game. It`s without a doubt my game of the year.
But I just created my second char, a warlock, and I was really bothered because of the bright and colourful clothing.
"Nevermind", I thought, "there are dyes in this game, so why not just look up where to find black dye?" But to my disbelief, I found out that there is black-and-red, black-and-summer etc, but no "pure black".
So I picked my first char, bought some of the black-and-whatever dyes, tried them out, and in most cases, they just didn´t look very black or just not black at all.
And considering that there are already dyes like pure red, green, blue and even orange I couldn`t help but ask...
Why? JUST F***ING WHY??? Why not implement such an easy, simple but yet so impactful thing?
I mean, let me ask you: If you would be an evil warlock, necromancer, assassin etc, would you dress up in bright a** colours? No? Yeah I thought so, because after all, playing as a dark, badass char while also looking like a rainbow unicorn destroys much of the immersion, right? So then, why do you make me dress up like that?
You literally have a feature in the game that allows players to dye their clothing like black-and-summer, peach-and-apricot, but you didn´t find it necessary to offer just "black"? Why??? If I would have been the guy responsible for this, this exact colour would have literally been the very first one on my list! And even now, just adding a new "just black" colour is very probably not more than just a few new lines of code. It would take you probably less time to add that than for me to write all this text here.
And yes I know, there´s "Aether`s black dye" mod, I already tried it (this was also the first and probably the last mod I installed because I usually play without mods), and guess what? It wouldn´t work!
Yes, I looked up alls the install instructions and youtube videos about BG3 mod manager, installed mod fixer etc, tried everything out that I could find, but ultimately the game just said "We Were unable to create a working story".
Moreover, I also found out that I can´t get any accomplishments in the game anymore if I have mods installed.
So I wasted two hours of my life trying to install a mod that wouldn`t work, just because you didn´t find it necessary to offer such an f***ing easy, simple thing. Thanks for that.
I mean, am I really the only one who´s bothered by this? I don´t think so!
Currently, the "Aether`s black dye" mod has over 140.000 downloads, so I would suggest the demand for pure black dye is pretty high. And after all, isn´t it actually part of your job as game developers to meet the demand of your customers? So that they don´t have to make and install mods for such simple little things themselves?

So sorry for the long rant, but after two hours of all this looking up and trying to make this work, I just felt really frustrated. And like I said, I couldn`t help myself but wondering why you wouldn´t implement such a tiny little but yet so important thing in the game in the first place.
I mean: It´s such a great game with millions of different dialogue options and story choices, you let the players decide so many things, even if they are so very bad, unwise or morally condemnable, but you don´t let them just dye their clothing black?
I genuinely don´t understand this.

So please, PLEASE just add this asap.
Many players like me will thank you for that so very much.
And like I said, I still love this game, I just want to fully enjoy it.
Thank you

100%. I keep searching for darker dyes, but a black dye should be given.

Due to the dyemaster guild rules, all-black dyes are only available in the Upper City.

Best I could get with Furnace and Harlequin... Works a bit better on the camp clothing or already Durge bloodied since it's got that Red in it. Really seems to depend on the specific article of gear. For example Minthara and Lae'zel are using the same dye in the image below, but shows up pretty different.

I fully expected some threads with a Black/Black option when we got to this place or a very expensive dye that would do the same. For the armor the metallic components are the most variable with the dyes.

Still trying every dye, still not able to get there. Had to go with safety colors

I mean it sorta does the trick for me, but I was looking forward to going full Midnight Black. Even if there was a dye that could just duo-tone with a dark grey or something for the more metallic components. Shadowheart is almost pulling it off. All my other villains are doing a two tone though. Tried to get an RGB vibe going, cause I liked that Artful blue on Minthara, but I'm still waiting on an all black dye hehe

Came here looking to see if there was some ultra-rare full black dye hidden away on a secret vendor or something, and...disappointment.

While the OP goes on a somewhat unbalanced rant, I do agree full black should have been an option and it is indeed weird that it is not included. Now, since Larian have built the game of the decade basically, I don't think they're that clueless they don't realise a good portion of the playerbase want full black more than any other colour and couldn't give less of a toss about yellow, pink-and-green and all the other bright, garish colors. The lack of a full black dye must therefore be a deliberate design choice - they don't want to give players access to full black dye in the game, for reasons unknown.

While not game breaking for me, it is a downer. It would be easier to accept if we had a bit of an explanation as to the why. Might be it is out there in older threads, but I haven't found anything.

I really got a chuckle out of this topic, thanks for the laughs. I agree there needs to be a black dye implemented, but I would also argue it needs an all white and all grey as well. I dunno why we have hippie and my little pony color swatch dyes, I thought this game was for adults not kindergarteners. Some of these color dyes are prone to make you vom at the sight of it.

I hope one day it will happen, we can only wait and see.

I completely agree! I love the dyes, but more often than not the outlandishly garish colors they turn my armor makes me laugh before I reset it, because I sure ain't keeping it. Having black dye would be amazing.

Ha! I forgot I made this comment. Just as funny today as it was back then. Gosh, I crack me up. I sure do.

Apparently there are a bunch of hidden dyes, including black, that are in the vanilla files and not available for whatever reason. Someone created a mod to configure them and add them to the tutorial chest, but it seems like it should be simple enough for Larian to add them to vendors or otherwise make them available. (There's a fully modded dye that's even darker black, along with some dragon- and god-themed dyes that look really sharp, if you're on PC.)

If we had real gold, silver, and glittery tones, we wouldn't necessarily need new clothes. smile

Aether's Black Dye or Vanta Black Dye mods will have to do for now.

Lack of dyes is the biggest reason I mod. Seriously, how can they not have the most generic and most popular dye in the game?
