Spell Caster myself, and like KyaSapphire, I rest when I am out of spells or before any major fight. I am not going to jeopardize a fight or limit my casters to utilizing only cantrips for the sake of saving some money on food costs. The only time that I am really worried is when there is of course time-sensitive quests.
I have found there is always something to talk about if you progress at that pace. End of the day, do what is best for your enjoyment of the game.
