For anyone who has this problem in the future, I found the solution. Follow this guide:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3023295121, but install the release version from August 3rd. Afterwards, enable auto camera rotate and make sure it works. Once this is done, use Steam to update the game. The setting should still be active, but you will not be able to turn the setting back off.
