I think they were referring to the evil path as a whole, not that specific choice. For me, the evil experience, combined with the Dark Urge origin, was enjoyable and not at all "empty" but that's what I did in my first playthrough. Maybe that's why I didn't feel like missing out on anything...
It probably is. Evil Durge was my first playthrough as well. File got corrupted in Act 3. Second playthrough was Tav doing the opposite and realized that it wasn't just me, EVERYTHING about how evil was implemented was dumb. Evil Tav not only loses companions, vendors, etc but also won't have any of the Durge specific content either.
