I would just make it that it always switches to the player character in forced conversations (ex: after fights or entering a cutscene). Why isn't this the case already if people have been complaining about this since EA?
Because a lot of people mistake Larian by and large doing what they want, and that generally lining up with at least a few requests sporadically, as proof that 'Larian listens to their players' (the number of times they've touted changes as 'fan requested' when it's for things that no-one here had ever seen or heard anyone asking for at all is quite impressive). The reality is... they actually don't really... only where it's convenient already or there's a *Lot* of crowd pressure. Which don't make them any worse than any other game studio, in many respects, to be fair... but they mostly focus on fixing what they're interested in, and having tight underlying mechanics, smooth UI operation and reliable interaction control are not big on their interest list. They'll do the bare minimum to keep it 'functional', and that's as much as you can expect from them.
