OK I seem to have got ALL my saves back working. No idea if this will help everyone but what I did was this: I went back methodically all the way through my saves trying to load them. I tried that Rivington save I mentioned earler and this time it did NOT load. So I was angry. I went back further to a save at Wyrms crossing. That loaded and i then went to the next save after that (that didnt load before) and it worked! so I did the next one - that worked - and I did them all right up to the very latest one. Seems to be the sequential loading from one that works before lower city (perhaps). I did notice that when they loaded Astarion got an award "Charlatan: Woman of her word Astarion is inspired" and 275 XP every time on load - I'm guessing that in act 3 theres some achievement thats new and the old saves dont have it so they crash. Maybe. Anyway I can now load any save up including the latest and get on with the game. Charlatan: Woman of her word Astarion is inspired and 275 XP.
I've successfully created a new save now and can move between all the saves at will.
