XD Gods above, all I can say is, Gale LOVES my characters (female high elf; female durge tiefling). I can do no wrong with him 8'D. I always romance Astarion though 8'D
The most important things to do for Gale are:
1. Give him all three pieces of the magical equipment he needs to consume. He's a hungry boy.
2. Let him die during battle. I know, you're like, WHY THE F would I let him die?
But listen, if he dies, his body will go necrotic. He has a special resurrection procedure he gives you upon his death. He'll magically appear with a pouch and instructions. If you can recite his instructions back to him and resurrect him, this makes him VERY happy. In my first playthrough, I swear to you, I was at exceptional approval with him before I even reached the goblin camp 8'D When he dies, this seems to trigger the Mystra/Share the weave moment with you ;D
At the end of Act 1, after you've defeated whichever side, speak to Gale at the celebration party. This should help the game understand, this is the character I want to romance.
Alternative things that raise his approval:
1.
Free Arabella from Kahga; Rescue Mirkon from the Harpies on the beach
2. Choosing good/kind dialogue options
3. Make sure you are long-resting and stopping to chat with the characters when you reach different locations. They often have dialogue or things they want to discuss. Sometimes you can receive approvals from conversations.
