Certain characters shine in certain situations, where they fall off in others. It's a team-based game, so that makes sense. Clerics specifically can CC undead, and Paladins *rock* at murdering tons of 'em. Wizards can pick and choose spells to suit every situation. For instance, Hold Person might not work, but undead still slip on Ice and Grease and so forth.
That said, in 5E, no one is a one-trick pony, not even Barbarians - and every character can switch to a different tactic to suit the situation.
I don't know if there is a specific Ogre, and I can't remember where in Act 2 you'd see one - but Ogres should be susceptible to mind controlling effects [but they're monsters, not persons]. If he's an undead ogre, that doesn't work though. Use a cleric for that.
