That's a disappointment after many hours of planning and weeks of play to see the plan blocked this way right at the end.

He will explode for you though, if you have good enough approval with him. The same as Karlach will offer to become a mindflayer in your stead. Both works.

Yes I tried that ending first. Quite heroic, but from the player's point of view less satisfying than defeating the brain the hard way. But I think it would be a shame to not save the game at that point and allow Gale his moment of glory.

As for the issue itself,

I would like to be able to ask our besti from the Underdark. But then, I want to get rid of the Emperor anyway because there is no way letting it hang around is a good idea.

Well the purpose was not to have to turn myself while leaving Orpheus whole, for Lae'zel's sake mainly. By the end of my 1st PT, I found her more sympathetic than Gale. So in my 2nd PT I thought offering up Gale to do La'zel a favor and keep my own physical integrity would be a great plan. (it would have been even better to sacrifice Wyll , but my 2nd PT was an evil one, so Wyll had already left us in Act 1)
But alas, the game blocks this option.
The mindflayer from the academy would be a good option also, on condition that this would spare Orpheus.
Or turning Volo instead would be great also.
