I'll never get the problem with Gale contemplating the image of Mystra. He is not intending to start a romantic relationship with the player character in that scene. He is contemplating his situation and takes it as a chance to show the PC why he cares about magic so much, which the PC can turn into a romance by picking the obviously romantic options.
In general I find the slower romances - Karlach, Shadowheart and Wyll - way more uncomfortable because they have a very fixed vision of wanting a romance, what this romance is supposed to look like and simply cast the PC as the romantic lead out of convenience. If you don't kiss Shart after the nice night you spent chatting, she disapproves. If you do kiss her, she instantly goes "I wanted to become a Dark Justiciar but now that I have you, I might not need it anymore." which is so creepy, especially since it can happen fairly early in Act1.
