He was loved in Early Acces, his 'EA version" was different, more interesting, more serious and had no horny concent. As far as I know, him and Astarion were two of the most popular character during EA stage, when Halsin was an NPC.
And then John decided to put many fetishes and fanservises into this poor druid when people actually didn't want this: they wanted his story to be expanded (the story, many parts of which were ripped out). But dataminers found them, found dialogues (which were recorded) and, well, you can compare what could've had been in the game and what trash content we got.
And yeah, I'm pretty sure the main problem of this situation is John is the writer of both Shadowheart and Halsin. He even posted "list of Shadowheart hooks/hints/prompts" where tou can find 'Climbing Mount Halsin".
I suspected it. Apparently, this writer loves to ruin their characters by infusing them with their own fetishes to the point of contradiction. At one point, Shadowheart refuses to share with other origin characters, arguing she doesn't want to be a backup lover, but then she has no problem sharing with Halsin and even encourages you to do so (there is no valid justification for this, it's simply bad writing and a convenience put in by the writer). Even though I didn't play the Early Access, my first impression of Halsin was that of a wise and responsible druid who would guide and advise the group. It must have been a tremendous disappointment for his fans to realize what the writer turned him into
