Those AI scripts were *terrible*, though. I think you're talking about the Advanced AI that Beamdog added for the re-release, becasue the scripts in the original trilogy were hardly usable.
And, they *are* up to the task. The AI is there. Just go and do the Self Same Trial, the mirrored party will be rather effective. Not only that, but if you have gear equipped from mods, they will *that* effectively, too.
I have only played through the original BG once, and that was when it released. I was so excited because I had been waiting for it for months. The AI was certainly not as terrible as everyone says, because I chose to play a Cleric and I had no clue how to play it. The AI kept my party alive and buffed well enough to finish the game. (I was 35 years old at the time.)
