It might not be as terrible as everyone says it is, but it certainly is as terrible as I say it is.
And that's not a joke, either, I know the scripts by heart; I've been playing that saga religiously for 25 years. I can go in depth on how and why the scripts are terrible.. But I won't. And yeah, I suppose it can be done.
For spellcasters these scripts were no good, but for melee & ranged characters those simple scripts worked. That is how I have played these games first, when I had no idea about how D&D worked. And I'd point out, that being able to control the entire party made certain aspects of the game easier, like setting up an ambush before combat. Because while combat ai in BG3 might be up to the task, pathfinding is certainly not; I rarely bother with stealth because that often requires ungrouping the entire party and moving every character individually.
