In one playthrough the mercenaries were wiped out by the goblins, only Wyll and my party surviving.
Anybody ever had Wyll die in that clash?

Never tried in the full game, but in the EA it was possible to trigger the gate event by sending a familiar ahead, and then dismissing it. So you would not be in combat, it was only the goblins and the adventurers. Then it was up to dice rolls. I think you should be able to revive Wyll, same as with Laezel if she gets killed by the gith patrol.

I've had Wyll die in the fight outside of the gate.

Picked him back up with a Resurrection Scroll after the battle and everything was normal (He casually strolled into the grove as if combat ended normally)

That's no longer the case, I think. I was on Honour Mode and encountered the Gith at level 3 - didn't want to push my luck. Lae'zel went ahead, and I figured I'd recruit Karlach in the meantime and come back with a little more power. Couldn't revive her.

Yes, Lae#zel is dead dead, if killed by the gith patrol outside of the party.

I think, it is the same with Wyll, if he isn't recruited yet.

Nope. I've had two mercs die before through sheer bad luck, but Wyll's script seems to be smarter.

The enemies always corner the same two mercs for me in melee while Wyll tries to take out ranged combatants.

Lae’zel leaves party to greet Voss - you abandon her - she’s doomed. If she is not a companion and dies at the risen road, you can revive her as if nothing happened.

Wyll cannot be permanently dead during the 1st raid at the grove gate.

Thank you, you have given me an idea how to conduct my science experiment to get past the Grove without engaging with it. So far it has seemed like a hard block by the game preventing you from encountering the goblins first.

I think the game still counts that as helping out in the fight. If you want to skip the grove cutscene, it might be better to try to jump past using the jump spell.

It didn't work; you are pretty much tunneled through there. It would just be fascinating from an RP perspective to not even know about the Grove for a while.

Did an experimental run and held back from the fight, all the mercs and Wyll dead as Norwegian Parrots.
