I just started in Honour Mode to try out the difficulty although I'm usually not a friend of such one-save-stuff. The owlbear fight got problematic and raises a question for me.

I took with me the two siblings as meatshields, quite a bad idea. First they hindered me sneaking to favorite positions, then they turned hostile on me during the fight, possibly because one was nicked by a wet spell and slipped on ice. The sister took Gale out of the fight for several rounds with a control spell, the brother downed Shadowheart and Astarion some times. In the end I decided to run away because I could not win against the two remaining owlbears and the two traitors. The owlbears killed the siblings and two of the companions. I had to use almost all my money to resurrect them. So far, so funny, so good.

Now the problem started: When I came back to the dungeon to finish the job, both remaining owlbears (mother and cup) were dead. They were alive when I left. Is this normal for the game if you leave an instanced area with NPCs left? Is this part of the Honour Mode, to deny you xp in case you left an instance to survive? If so, that is absolutely breaking all the rest of immersion the game had (they died of a heart attack maybe?) and I will surely stop playing.

No, I think the owlbear is a special case, since it is canonically killed by the goblins after a while and the cub taken. Maybe your longrest triggered that.

This is partly normal. It happened to me in early access after sparing the owl bear and long resting. Eventually, the goblins will always kill the mother owl bear and kidnap the cub.

It may be that if you send these two there, they will now always kill the mother owl bear and cub unless you specifically spare it at end of combat. It may also be that the cub was killed in battle and you didn't notice? The cub's death is the only unusual development

No, we killed the owlbear companion, the cub and the mother were alive at the end of the fight, when we left the dungeon. Ok, then probably the long rest triggered the death. I'm not sure now I saw the dead cub, maybe I just assumed it's death. Let's see wether the goblins have it. A pity I did not know this mechanic, we would have gone back without a long rest. Thanks for the hints.

any time you leave an area and long rest the game can move certain quest lines on and yes the owlbear is one of those... its a normal plot device and not just something that only happens in honor mode

The cub was indeed in the Goblin Camp which I cleared yesterday. It's a pity that it has these huge mesmerizing eyes which urges me to love it, otherwise it could be useful for my camp supplies ... biggrin

I tend to sneak around, steal the egg unseen and run out again. I never, ever, ever fight the Owlbear. Not since EA when I learned you can recruit the cub. There is NO way in Avernus that I play this game without the Owlbear Cub.

On my very fist Honour Run, I did pretty much everything possible in Act one besides the Creche, and only then went on to deal with the Goblin Camp. I accidentally nuked the Cub with Barcus' Heavy Backpack and restarted right there and then.

Fear my wrath, for it is great indeed.

Yeah, human feelings are ... interesting. You kill hundreds of intelligent beings who are in your way without a problem but panic because of the wellbeing of a wild beast, because it is so cute (the Brigitte Bardot baby seal effect). I invited the cub into my camp but then failed one of the interactions and the dumb thing ran away. I'm not sure it will return, presumably not.
