I would like to go on record as stating Drow should not start off with the dancing lights cantrip. this doesn't fit in with the lore of drow, nor is a good choice seeing as how drow have superior darkvision to start. It's in my opinion a waste, seeing as if your playing a drow/half your never going to use it. To fit better in with the lore of the drow something along the lines of their lore friendly darkness, or levitate (though it seems to not be in the spells that I've seen perhaps feather fall?). I can see the abuse seeing as how these 2 are not cantrips yet it irks me to see them with dancing lights. Maybe fairyfire seeing as how that to fits into lore.

I agree, but it's been pretty useful for my non-nightvision allys. So who knows. Maybe a blind or even bonuses when fighting in the dark? IDK, I'm not too well versed tbh

These are the old Drow, you are talking about. The 5e elven subrace is much more limited. They basically only get some attribute adjustments, superior Darkvision, weapon training and a hand full of crantrips/spells (dancing lights, faery fire (at 3rd level) and darkness (at 5th level)). Spellcasting also is no longer limited to the caste, with commoners and high born Drow having access to different spells. Oh, and sunlight sensitivity, but I guess that one got taken care of by the tadpole in BG3. No levitation, no spell resistance, etc.

Beat me to the punch! I like that Fairy Fire is a 3rd level ability, don't like its limited used but I can understand mechanically why it was put in the game in this state given the powerful advantages it presents. I think the OP would have also had his concerns addressed by a "features" area of sorts during character creation that shows what abilities will be unlocked for each class/race beyond level one.

Rather hard to disagree, but it is in the 5e rules that they have a Dancing Lights cantrip. Why, I do not know. :P

As Drows are really not OP in BG3, they could maybe get to choose one the following : 1/day: Darkness or 1/day: Faerie Fire.
I am thinking at level 1 ( would that be OP ? )
Both are great effects though, but I think Drows do not get many perks/skills/proficiencies in comparison to other races.

Nb : unless these are already gained at level 3 and 5 as others state here per rules.

Drow are actually one of the strongest races in EA currently. Their big disadvantage, sunlight sensitivity, is completely removed. And they keep their superior darkvision and powerful spells. Dancing lights isn't great, sure, but faerie fire and darkness are excellent and almost any class would appreciate having them available.

I'm really hoping we get Duergar and deep gnomes as well, since, from an implementation point of view, it's just some different skin colors on existing models. Duergar get enlarge person which is a lot of fun. 8 foot tall dwarf fighter once a day.

I would like to see them add something to represent the "keen senses" trait. Only in dark areas like dungeons or if a darkness spell is cast.

I would say that gnomes are doubtful due to the tadpole unable to turn a gnome into a mindflayer, the process fails though it should be noted that with the addition of outside interference like dark magic they can become something else like a Gnome ceremorph, Gnome squidling or Mozgriken

Dancing light for a drow is stupid as hell I agree. They might have been drunk at WotC when they decided to give them this spell. But a bonus to attack when fighting in the dark would be nicer indeed.

the keen senses trait in 5e is proficiency in perception... so they already have that?

I'm sure if the thing can effect a vampire it can effect a drow

My only gripe is that in 5e, there is no long rest limitation on the dancing lights cantrip. Why did Larian add this restriction in Baldur's Gate? It's a cantrip. You don't see this limitation on High Elves/Half High Elves.
