I misread your question to mean "what multiclass build is a Paladin equivalent".
As how not to "fall" - whenever there is a dialgue option PALADIN, then NOT taking it usually means oath breaking.
As to my reading of the question - IMO take a level of Cleric of your favourite deity and then - depending upon its character - go Fighter, Ranger or Bard.
E.g. Knowlodge Domain + Lore Bard = Paladin of Oghma, War or Life +Swords = Paladin of Eilistraee, War/Tempest + Barbarian = Paladin of Gruumsh etc.
