I'll just paste my thoughts I just posted on another thread, minus the specifics of the thread itself:

There should be a way to keep him alive, even if it requires some changes of plans, or at least an option to resurrect him in some fashion if we allied with him. A Dark Urge (even a Tav, but with a steep persuasion check) could potentially convince Gortash to scrap the original plans while still maintaining his rule. Sword Coast would still be saved, and Baldur's Gate would be ruled by a Banite tyrant, but tyranny isn't the end of the world.

Alternatively, if we have no option of convincing him to scrap the plan earlier, we could instead get some sort of way to resurrect him after he gets lazily killed off by the writers. One way could be to beseech Bane while using Speak with Dead on Gortash, circling around to the idea of continuing to rule BG while scrapping the original plan. Make it a tough persuasion check, since he's a god. Otherwise, we could potentially trouble "Withers" to bring him back, which could result in Gortash defecting from Bane's worship. I imagine he'd still rule with an iron fist, but less so, with no need to dedicate anything to Bane.

Just some ideas some people might be interested in. It'd be nice to receive a lovely letter from him in the epilogue, lol. Other than that, I'd sure love more content between him and Dark Urge.

It would add a great deal of depth to the endings, I feel, rather than the black or white "control brain" versus "brain is dead, you are a real hero" endings. "Greater evil is destroyed and Baldur's Gate is under rule of a lawful evil person who otherwise is no longer going to take over the world" is a refreshingly grey ending. He's intelligent enough to know not to rock the boat, plus with the original plan falling apart at the seams, it makes more sense to scrap it and hold onto what you've got than to try to salvage the failing plan.
