Must be that 504 gateway timing out, either that or the no-skip CD player is skippin' again - my low end theory on that one heheh
It's too bad these boards time out so often. I really wonder how many posts get missed or never posted due to upstream server stuff. Like probably quite a few!
For the Globe my thinking is that, because there is a standard 5e spell that behaves pretty differently under the same name, this could lead to some confusion. I think it would be different if it was a special like the Art of War spell. You know, where there was just one scroll and the suggestion that this is very powerful and very special magic, like a one off. But then you can snap it up at the Sundries for about a grand, or just have any wizard learn it. I think the standard 5e might be too weak to impress at this point, although just shutting down all magic lower than lvl 5 is still pretty potent, peeps would probably balk now. But it could just as easily have been called Dome of Deliverance or whatever right?
For such a 3d spell in the visual vibe, mechanically I just find that it really flattens the playpattern and compresses all the nuance of endgame combat into dome magic management. It can take a whole big thing and pancake it down such that, regardless of class archetype or party comp or the specific enemies/battlefield in a given brawl, once Globe of Invulnerability is attained, the rest of combat keys off it. Sure we could ask players not to use the powerful spells they've worked 11 lvls to unlock, but that's a bit of a silly ask. Of course everyone will use it if it's that awesome, so the issue is trying to keep the sense of cool and fun without all the knock-on effects that makes everything else feel secondary.
That's probably the biggie right now for me, since the Globe dominates late game combat in the same way the spell Haste would at that first major spike, when player characters start coming into their own, but even moreso in this case. Especially because it's so localized on the field of battle, and pulls all the focus to the one much smaller zone for the cage-fight.
Other spells which might get a buff to counterbalance, I don't know, maybe Stoneskin (which is pretty lame right now compared to the powerhouse spell it was in BG2)? I don't think I've cast that one a single time in BG3, as it never seems worth the lvl 4 slot. Perhaps Cloudkill could also use a buff, since it rarely manages to actually kill anyone at 5d8 poison damage by the time this magic is attained. As a cloud it's pretty easy for enemies to jump out of the poison before the next turn. Again not a bad spell per se, but it's behind the power curve for a lvl 5 slot, compared to say Cone of Cold or Hold Monster etc.
I will say, I do enjoy the visual design of the Globe quite a lot though! It reminds me of those jungle gym playground domes, like I could just imagine the kids playing Globe of Invulnerability at recess, if this was even remotely a kids game (which clearly it's not lol) but it's got a swinging charm to it that way like "Tag! you're it!"
I just think they went a bit overboard on the powerspike. Again this might work fine if enemies were casting Chain-Lightning and Disintegrate to beat the Globe, or casting Globes of their own, but they aren't, so it just gets kinda boring after a while with the one note. Just my thoughts, I'm sure they're echoed in the reddits and whatnot by now, but was curious how everyone else here feels. The scenario
