In BG3 I find control spells feel like way more of a gamble when I have damage options handy. I tend to use them more in Solasta, but the tweaks in this game have it so that when I'm calculating what's the best way to not lose, reliably doing damage seems like the better option. I would imagine that people look at the calulation as less "if I go all out now I will have to rest" and more "I can go all out now because I can rest after." They want to win, and they approach in the way circmustances allow them to most reliably do that.
You can get control spells to 100% by stacking the spell dc, at which point they are not that much of a gamble. laugh I find damage spells to be sometimes less reliable, e.g. a glyph spells failed to trigger, because it was placed on a slope and the enemy was standing within the glyph, but slightly higher.

I genuinely have no idea what "stacking the spell DC" means. Enlighten me. I also don't use glyphs. I just use things I can directly target, like Ray of frost, scorching Ray, magic missile, etc. Or stuff where I can target areas enemies already are in.

=D That's why I don't have it on my MC (in this case Astarion) because I figured the vampire would neither want the tadpole gone nor tarnish his looks, Gale otoh might just be desperate enough - and it looks pretty good on him too. Though I wish, you could choose the eye to make it the left one.

You can raise the difficulty check for your spells to the point where enemies effectively cannot make the saving throw against it, because the value is too high.

My plan to control Ethel was not very successful. I got only a 40% chance to apply control spells (Hold Monster, Polymorph, Fear), even with disadvantage for Ethel, and was not willing to waste time and lvl 4/5 spell slots for it. I have + 14 to spell attacks, how do you get more?

Other than that the Ethel fight was so easy, I'm now ashamed we ran away the first time (mainly because I had thought that all copies really had Ethel's hp of 140). We destroyed something, then Shadowheart threw something, then Alicia (my main) killed Ethel with a Witch Bolt. Which I find fitting.

For the Control Spells, you need Spell Save DC not Spell Attack. In your Spellbook it's the little Shield symbol on the top right, if you hover over it, lists what adds to it, like for Spell Attack it's your Spell Modifier, Proficiency, but also things from items or consumables like Elixir of Battlemage's Power - some items give both attack and DC, others give only one. With Spell Attack you role against the enemy's armour class, with Spell Save DC they roll against your value with their bonus derived from the ability shown on the spell. Most control spells have a Wisdom Save, since many caster type have high WIS, they are more likely to resist your control spells.

But the big brutish melee types usually don't have great WIS and if you put them into my favourite Hold Person, it guarantees your own melees crits against them, which is nice especially if said opponent has a high AC.

The symbol on top right is Spell Attack (14), the symbol left of it is Spell Difficulty (retranslated, don't know the English label) which is at 20. But for me the best control spell is still to apply 150 damage to people. wink
