If this is true then I am actually a bit concerned for the future of DnD. Larian would obviously play a big role in later DnD developments and this could be good. But at the same time Larian has shown it will abandon lore and "dumb down" the rules as well.

If this happens, then D&D video games will be over for me. If Larian is the only developer making D&D games, I won't get to play a D&D game ever again. And that truly sucks. frown

That sounds a bit far fetched as Tencent is hardly a rpg company. And if they want to get into the market I would expect them to focus on a Runterra/League of Legends rpg (they are already working on an mmo).

Byeeee!

Also Totally disagree, Tencent would open up the IP to be better utilized instead of stodgy old Hasbro which doesn't seem to know what to do with their own property or how to leverage it, license it or manage it. Given that Tencent has stakes in 35+ different gaming studios - including Fromsoftware, Funcom, Riot, Remedy, Epic and Paradox they will open up the IP to a number of developers to access, each will have their own interpretation and if you can't find one in the list that fits your needs then the problem isn't all those studios.

Hasbro is still a bunch of old constipated dinosaurs that can't get out of their own fucking way to allow themselves or anyone else to be successful. Frankly it's maddening that they shit-canned the team that green lit Larian to make Bg3 which ended up being GOTY x 3 AND made more money for Hasbro in 3 months than they made with the IP in 10 years.

I hope that the sale goes through and that Tencent ends up owning the IP.

tencent = weixin = wechat

Y'all know what WeChat really does, right? Earn social credits by playing computer games, but don't you play too much!

If that buyout happens, maybe I will resurrect Tactical Studies Rules and make a new product called "Swords & Shopping", because that is really more descriptive of what you do in these games.

"Swords & Shopping" sounds like a cozy fantasy murder mystery. Which is a way cuter mental image than what you described.

Tencent is an everything company.
As long as they think they can make money out of it, there's nothing in the gaming scene they wouldn't invest on.

Incidentally they already had significant investments in Larian (well, significant from Larian's viewpoint, minuscule from their perspective), which is why according to this story Larian is acting as an intermediary with them.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

This would explain why Larian has not announced anything. I think they want to stop being nickel and dimed by Hasbro over people creating mods for the game and license usage. Not to mention the huge cut Hasbro is basically getting for the limited license use.

I am hoping this deal goes through because I think it means we will finally get the modding tools we need and Larian can expand on the IP to add additional modules and the next thing they do will be something else in the forgotten realms.
