Hello there. Got a bit of a problem. Trying to learn to mod the game. And the way I usually do it is I look at mods others have done, change a thing or two around. Save them and then experiment while teaching myself what works and what doesn't.

The problem is this. I am using notepad to edit the .pak files. Afterwards, no matter how I try to save it. BG3 MM no longer will accept it as a .pak file.

I've changed it from .txt to all files then save it as a .pak and it still wont accept it.

So what am I missing here? Anyone have any hints?

Use the export tool to extract pak files into a folder and back: https://github.com/Norbyte/lslib/releases/tag/v1.18.7

The BG3 Mod manager also can extract them, which is sometimes more convenient if you just want to quickly extract a pak to the desktop, to see how stuff was done there. The original files of most things changed in mods are in the Shared.pak in the game's data folder. UI stuff is in Game.pak.

And I hope you use Notepad++ not the Windows notepad (unless you're a disciple of Loviatar, then go you!)

Yeah, every time I tried to do something I got a different error. Screw it. Modding a simple power to do more damage shouldn't be this God damn problematic. Just going to delete everything and move on to a different game.

For a game that doesn't have an offical editor and requires third party tools for modding, BG3 is extremely modding friendly, most data is in text files and the game takes care of putting together various little snipplets where patches or mods made a change here or there.

But well, any time of modding (or programming) is playing whack-a-mole with errors you caused until they stop and you can check if the intended change actually works. (And of course the first time someone else tries your changes they notice a very obvious bug and you start all over again.)
