Anybody want to gush about the characters that they love? Who fills your heart with joy? Why do you love ‘em? So personally I adore Shadowheart and Lae’zel, Alfira and Lakrissa, Dame Aylin and Isobel, and I’m very fond of Jaheira. Shadowheart is a huge comfort character for me, though, so she has to be at the top. Spoilers that include Act 3 and epilogue Romancing Shadowheart as a part charming bard, part cleric of Selune, resisting Dark Urge is the most satisfying arc I have ever played in a video game. Sparing the Nightsong, rejecting Bhaal and becoming a wholly new person, saving her parents and retiring to a lovely little cottage in the countryside with a barn full of animals, and house full of cats, and a garden? Like, could it get any more perfect than that? You’ve got two origin characters with similar struggles, torn between darkness and light, not remembering who they are exactly. Playing a Shadowheart Selunite redemption arc along with a Selunite Durge’s redemption arc is just incredible, trust me. It’s epic. Throw bard in there for flavor because who doesn’t love a witty little bard charming her way out of anyone suspecting her of being a serial killer (in her past life). But I digress. Along with a lovely story arc on her own terms or alongside a resisting Durge, you have a lovable and extremely well written (and played) character! The writers who came up with, and the voice actor who delivered, some of Shadowheart’s wittiest lines (that are always good for a laugh) and her most earnest lines, knocked it right out of the park. In a huge way. I appreciate the depth, as well, that you see at so many points in the game. I’m thinking, for example at the very beginning, when Shadowheart approves of you being kind to a wild boar. In pretty much the first 30 minutes of the game, the “real her” is shining through almost instantly. So yeah, I love that character and she’s even better than Sebille from DOS2, who I also absolutely loved. The epilogue put her over the top in this regard. With Lae’zel, I just want to repeat what I wrote on a thread titled “Lae’zel is the most unlikable character.” Let me have those comments linked to a much more positive thread. In all of my playthroughs, Lae’zel is an incredible, loyal friend with a spot-on dead-pan sense of humor… Tell me more about how the gith eat miniature space hamsters like Boo, lol. (Thanks to her voice actor, wonderful work.) Plus she practically kills the netherbrain all by herself with a haste potion, and then just letting her loose to spin. She’s not somebody who lets you down. And I adore her. I’m not able to romance her because I have severe Shadowheart brainrot, as they call it. But Lae’zel is my second favorite character. We all see how she grows over the course of the game. Then I chose to persuade her to stay in Faerun and figure out what she wants to do with her life, apart from Vlaakith and Orpheus. In the epilogue, she seemed so happy. She had made a lot of new friends with whom she was fighting against Vlaakith’s forces on the Sword Coast, liberating creches. And she was raising the kid from the gith egg as her son. She said that she was raising him to choose his own destiny (a scholar or whatever he wanted to be, not a warrior brutalized like Lae’zel had been). Just like she had been able to determine her own destiny. I was tickled to death. (Another theme of breaking generational trauma anyone? Astarion lovers can get behind that.) Lae’zel is an absolute boss, one of the best characters I’ve ever seen in a video game (also, love you Shadowheart). Plus, it feels so GOOD when she greets you in the epilogue and calls you “old friend.” She is never not in my party. And I will never not gush about my favorite little green lizard. Jaheira I also think deserves a lot of love. I wasn’t sure whether I liked her until I helped her rescue Minsc, and then whenever I would talk to her, she would say, “The cub speaks.” I thought that was so sweet and endearing. And to visit her house and see how playfully she interacts with her adoptive kids, and to hear her talk about her husband, was just lovely. Her personality as a tough, but fair and affectionate, “camp mom” of sorts is excellent. Lakrissa and Alfira, they’re just adorable together and I can’t get enough of it. Their little chats together at the tiefling party, Last Light Inn, and atop the Elfsong Tavern are so cute. Same with Isobel and Aylin. It warms my heart. Two already great characters combine and create a sum even greater than its parts. Anyway, those are some of my favorites. (Honorable mention to the Durge that I created, who feels like a whole, real character unto herself, to me.) Anybody else wants to gush, you’re most welcome.

Just like you, I adore Shadowheart and Lae'zel as love interest and started to also like Minthara. Too bad she has too little content compared to the rest. As for npcs, I absolutely love Isobel and Aylin, even on my evil playthrough I couldn't force myself to hurt either of them.
For Shadowheart I specifically prefer to play as a Selunite, love their dynamic, bickering back and forth till act 3.
I'll be honest, I'm not really impressed by male companions or npcs. Halsin, Astarion and Emperor are top 3 characters I just can't stand, at all.

I didn't find the characters in this game terribly compelling or attractive. Most of them are very loud or insincere in one way or another which is just not my cup of tea. Shadowheart is just a walking "broken bird" trope and also often feels like a snarky teenager which is a bit weird given her age. But I really liked Minthara even though she obviously didn't get anywhere near the same attention as the main cast.

I love Jaheira (am an old BG1 & 2 player) and she's so well realized. It's been a few years now since I played either, but it's one of a few examples I can think of in modern games where seeing an old character again is like seeing an old friend, even though back then she was just some voice lines, text, a sprite and a 110x170 portrait. I love her sense of humour as well, and one of the most touching moments in the game for me was when she talked about Khalid, real misty-eyed moment and I don't get those often. Seriously wouldn't mind a hug option for her sometimes.
Seeing Minsc and Boo was lovely as well, I wish they were in more of the game.
(if only Viconia got the same treatment)
I'm a serial Shadowheart romancer and can only echo what you've put here, very likely one of the better rpg romance arcs I can think of and the selunite/parents alive epilogue was so wholesome I didn't know I needed it until it happened.

This is a nice thread. Gale is my favourite closely followed by Astarion and Lae'zel. Team mom Jaheira also makes the selection of beloved characters as do Barcus and Rolan. Surprisingly for me, I do like the child characters quite a bit and even more surprisingly the Gur. Gale is just someone I enjoy having around. I like his rambling, his easy, effortless confidence, his humour and his bouts of melancholia. I like that under the veneer of stuffy politeness he is a bit of a thrill seeker with a taste for a good challenge, and that he has a ratio-based morality which sometimes seems at odds with his otherwise wholesome demeanour. He further endeared himself to me, when I noticed how gladly he plays your ever loyal wingman and gives others a chance to shine - as long as you allow him the same courtesy and let him solve all the arcana and logic puzzles. I wished his arc - especially his romance arc - was a little better resolved in game, but at least he got a very satisfying epilogue - and I did immensely enjoy his Origin - though I have to say a lot of the credits for this enjoyment falls to Astarion. Astarion has been gushed about enough, I suppose, but I especially liked how he was used in Gale's Origin. Whenever the narration told me Mystra would disapprove of something, Astarion played devil on Gale's shoulder. After Astarion spun his little tale about taking over the cult, Gale's thought as he went to bed drifted towards what else could be achieved with the secrets at the Heart of the Absolute. Such a perfect partner in crime who does not shun you for ideas of magical power and employing less savoury methods.
Along with that though, I loved that Astarion was a very good Tav for my Gale. In Origin you don't get to share a beautiful illusionary sky with your dearest friend or loved one - you'll eventually figure out that exploding the orb is probably a stupid idea but all your companions are too wrapped up in their own affairs to care about the lonely guy with the divine mission to explode. I was wondering where I'd get the emotional component from that gives Gale some will to live and some sense of being more than just useful - and then Astarion came along with his hesitant confession. His confession is a lovely scene on its own, but I found it especially impactful with Gale. The transition from exploiting someone for their power to wanting a genuine relationship with them because they are a great person touches upon the core theme of Gale's character arc and resolves is much better than Gale's own romance does. My sole regret: I can tell Mystra that Astarion saved Gale's life, but I cannot tell Astarion. Lae'zel started to grow on me after the group left the Grove for the first time. She first impressed me by reacting in a level headed manner to Shadowheart's goading and shortly after happily answered Gale's question about her fighting technique and instantly offered to teach him. I never felt regret for giving her a chance, she is such a good friend. Not much must be said about Jaheira, Barcus and Rolan, I guess, but I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the children in this game. Arabella is great (I am still cross with Withers that he denied me teaching her the Weave!), I love how dark Mol's plot gets and I was so genuinely happy with Silfy's development. The Gur finally endeared themselves to me because they aren't mindless monster hunters. As soon as they learn that Astarion has control over his own will, they start treating him as a person, especially Gandrel seems to be a very laid back, open minded guy. Reading their letter during the epilogue brought me great joy. As for Shadowheart: While it sounds mean: I do like the ending without her parents better. During the epilogue I discovered that finding a cure for Astarion apparently can also include hunting shadow mages and since travelling Shart seems to do also fight those, I imagine her and owlbear teaming up with Astarion and Gale again for some further adventures. Her cottage core fantasy is also just a little bit too idyllic for my liking. I know it's mean, especially since I do quite like her parents.

Glad you like the thread. It’s making me realize that I probably dislike the characters that I do because I haven’t given them enough of a chance (i.e., Halsin, Wyll). But I doubt I’ll be giving them a whole ton of a chance because I just love the others too much already. And I want THEM in my party. Like I said, I adore Shadowheart and Lae’zel. And I’m pretty fond of Gale and Astarion. They both have their moments when they’re annoying, and Astarion can be quite callous toward Shadowheart, which grinds my gears, but overall I enjoy them. Epilogue spoilers I really like Gale’s ending where he becomes a professor and spawn Astarion becomes a heroic assassin. And Gale invites my character to come give a lecture, that was cool. I haven’t played with Karlach too much, but she seems fun. I wish that we could have more than three companions in our party so that we could get to know everybody more. That would help. I love the teeth-ling kid NPCs too, they are all great. It’s so cool being able to buy a newspaper from Silfy every day and bolstering her self-confidence. I couldn’t find Arabella in Act 3, I’ll have to look around more next time. Mirkon and Mattis are always good for a laugh, yeah, the tiefling kids are all great. Mol Act 3 spoilers Mol annoys me at the end though because when I told her that I had freed her soul from eternal imprisonment in Raphael’s house, she threatened me and told me she would get her vengeance on me! Like girl, you escaped from Moonrise and got a new eyeball for free, seriously? Shadowheart Epilogue spoilers I think that what Shadowheart’s “best ending” is may depend to some degree on what the main character hopes for after the events of the game are over? I still think that for Shadowheart, from her perspective as a character, it would be better for her to have her parents around. But if the player character wants to have a life of adventuring, then they might choose to sacrifice her parents for that ending.
That would not be my choice. Because my character would want that peaceful life after all of the hell that she went through as the Dark Urge. I’m extremely happy with that ending. My playthroughs are very much centered on Shadowheart and Lae’zel, though, so your playthroughs being more centered on Gale and Astarion may be part of why we have a difference of opinion. Meaning, your ideal vision for her future centers around Gale and Astarion. And that’s fine, we all have our preferences!

Now that I've finally got the less bugged (since she is still very much buggy) Minthara to wrok, she is my favourite non-origin companion, together with Jaheira. She is evil, but doesn't try to create any drama, and I've found her commentary (e.g. on Ketheric) quite insightful at times. Jaheira was one of my favs in BG1 and 2, and I think they have kept her in character, so that was no surprise that I liked her. As for the origin companions, I have a soft spot for Wyll, because he was the only guy in the party that did not act in a way that I'd consider problematic (or even creepy) on my first playthrough. Which just reminded me how low the bar was. And I also like Karlach; her being cheerful and friendly was a nice counterpoint to the drama between Laezel and Shadowheart. It might be because I simply like exploration and adventuring, and I'm not looking forward to playing conflict mediator or counselor, but after a few playthroughs, I just don't feel like recruiting some of the companions anymore.

Concerning Mol Yes! She gets angry when you kill her warlock patron because she wants to be powerful and take over the city. ^^ It's a little sad - but also cool - that her "I look out for my family" line really is just an act. Though it is sad how much the other tiefling children still miss her. Concerning Epilogues I generally like the adventuring style epilogues better, especially Gale's. In Shadowheart's case my preference is mostly based on the writing. The lonesome cleric looking for meaning while battling shadows with her trusty owlbear companion is appealing imagery to me and I like how she is written in that ending. From Shart's point of view the cottage core fantasy is most definitely the better ending.
Also, I should say, I didn't aim for the adventuring ending with her, it just happened because I gave her her own choice in the moment, but I was very pleased with the story it eventually created for me. =) Now only Lae'zel has to come back ...

My favourite companions are Lae'zel, Karalach, Wyll and Jaheira. Lae has just such a great story and Karlach and Wyll are great together and I love their Avernus ending. Jaheira is just her awesome self, I always liked her in the other games and Larian really did her justice.
NPCs I really like are Barcus, he is just the best. Korrilla and Hope Hearthflame - I really wish,we could have explored their tragic and messed up backstory more. Florrick - love her, sadly, she has not enough screen time Abdirak - I really liked, how wholesome he was for a priest of an evil goddess. And I'm sad, they didn't do more with him in act 3, especially, since there is the whole story with the Ilmater temple and Loviatans and Ilmaterians don't really get along. Plus Loviatar is loyal to Bane, which could have made for a whole new dynamic all together. Rolan and his siblings, Zevlor and Dammon from the tieflings, I just like them Arabella - she is awesome and I love her interactions with Withers Dame Aylin - she is a lot, but I love her
Enemies, I really like Auntie Ethel - she is so much fun and so well done. Raphael - probably the most fleshed out of your ( potential, since you can just sign the contract) enemies. He is tons of fun too and the House of Hope probably my favourite map. The voice actor does a really great job. Ketheric - good build up, tragic story, great voice actor, what's not to like I would put Gortash on the list too, since in theory, he is great as a character and adversary, but he just comes in so late and you learn most of his shenanigans through letters and diaries and I would have preferred more direct interactions, maybe some political intrigues.

I like Tav the most. After Shepard, no one created a character that had such power and importance in the game. I love how much of an impact she has on the story by influencing the rest of the team. If she had a little more sense of humor in the style of an ironic version of Hawk, she would be perfect.

Korrilla and Hope Hearthflame - I really wish,we could have explored their tragic and messed up backstory more. Had a thought after reading the "training hope" scrolls and considering Hope's spirited defense of her sister's goodness AND her refusal to leave the hells. I wonder if Korilla and Hope were the same person? Korilla Hearthflame got entangled with Raphael, he tortures her for years, she resists but eventually breaks and then the only part of Korilla's goodness that remains is a small sliver of Hope. Kinda like the twofold truth heresy. I know it's a tin foil hat theory but hear me out: If you read it through the Pandora's box story. Korilla opens the box, all sorts of misery ensues BUT that misery comes with with the boon of hope.

As small as her role compared to Origins, what she delivers is absolutely amazing. Whoever wrote her was brilliant, and Emma did such an amazing job delivering the emotions. One I'll on disagree is Astarion... initially he is over the top, sooo supremely annoying and I just want to smack him. But when he starts trusting Tav, and opening up, Neil delivers so much power in those backstory lines, it is bone-chilling. Even writing this statement, I am getting goosebumps. Astarion's story is my favorite, even over the main quest. As for the rest, best to worst: Karlach (though incomplete), Shadowheart, Lae'zel, Gale, Wyll, Halsin. I have yet to successfully recruit Jaheira or Minsc NPCs that I love: Kerri (Free the Artist) and Philomeen (Rescue Nere)!! Amazing voice acting! Oh, and I do Looovveee Aylin. Love! And of course, all of the Dead Three. Literally every NPC is voice acted brilliantly; not one boring-azz Bethesda socially awkward developer voice.

Well, Astarion felt a bit like a stereotype but he did make me laugh and I had him in my party for most of the game so definitely not all bad. Also the culminations of his arc were both very satisfying and a high point of the game in my opinion.

Hm well, I’m not personally going to criticize you, because I just don’t have the energy for that, lol. So, please feel free to gush about your character. And I would hope that folks can keep things positive, as that’s the intention of the thread. Edit: Oh, I also just remembered that I love (Act 3 spoilers) Hope as a character. Even though I have a bad habit of temporarily knocking her out for her +4 shield… lol. She still sends a nice letter to you in the epilogue! Personifying Hope and having a quest where you rescue her is creative and rather profound. Plus she’s adorable, especially when she thinks she’s horribly disfigured but isn’t.

I always thought that Raphael took an interest in the sisters for some reason and Korrilla was open for working with him and Hope not. She seems to be another cleric of Selune, judging by what she wears ( which is basically the same outfit, Isobel wears), so probably not in favour working with a devil. He still might have some hold about her. I always thought, that one of their parents might have promised him their children's services for something and Korrilla was ok with that and Hope not. But I do like your theory. It is sad, that those two got a bit sidelined in the HoH story in favour of that silly Haarlep encounter.
