We can only speculate why Halsin was changed. I am pretty sure if somebody decides to address this question directly to Halsin's writer, there will be no answer. Some say he was chaned because mostly people saw him as "hot daddy", so Larian decided to give this to fans tio please them, plus in this case it would be easier to use him and Astarion for promotional reasons (Halsin was one of the most liked characters in EA). Sex sells, as they say.
In EA Halsin was presented as adult, wise, witty scholar who was eager to study Tav and their tadpole. He could show sarcasm, he had a temper. Now... well, he is but a hollow husk of what he was. So yes, many people were dissapointed hence they write feedbacks on Larian discord and directly to support.
