I did indeed have to cast a "new" daylight to dispel each "new" darkness cloud.
As Daylight is a 3rd Level Spell and Darkness is only a 2nd Level Spell, Daylight should dispel Darkness for its entire spell duration, and not just for the initial spell cast.
