I rescued Wyll's dad
despite getting Wyll out of his pact
, and it didn't seem to be properly acknowledged by the other people at my camp. I'll put in as many steps as I can remember, because my path seemed quite complicated to get there.

After rescuing Mizora from Moonlight Towers, demanding to end the pact, then completing act 2 and going on to meet Mizora in Baldur's Gate, I persuaded Wyll not to renew his pact. I asked if we could try to save his dad but he said he'd already be dead, so I left it a few days and got on with things.

Eventually I was trying to rescue the Gondians, which led me to the iron throne. First time, I took Gortash's warnings and left, and then I went to visit Ansur, which I think completed Wyll's companion quest. The next day, my character decides that Gortash was bluffing ("if he kills me, he'll lose my netherstones") and returns to the iron throne, WITHOUT WYLL.

We find Ulder Ravengard in the cells, and release him, I gain control and move him out of the cell, and then Mizora appears like a petulant child trying to make a big scene out of it. Only, he survived the first round of exploding spiders. So either Laezel or Shadowheart came up to him, and Dim Doored him as far down the corridor as they could, leaving the spiders running along behind.

I was expecting
that Mizora would be angry I'd beaten her, possibly kill the Grand Duke directly or try to punish me (although I was hoping to point out that I had no pact with her). I was happy enough that I'd been able to pull one over on her, it would have just been nice to get a reaction so I knew if Wyll's soul was still safe and so I could gloat some more.

What actually happened is
Ulder Ravengard did recognise Mizora and wasn't happy that she was in camp, but otherwise nothing was mentioned. I spoke to Mizora and she started talking about how exciting the Blade of Avernus sounded, "but we won't tell anyone a devil is pulling the strings," so I wondered if she had decided our agreement was void and she would keep Wyll's soul. It all worked out in the epilogue: Wyll said that he'd lost his powers, and that his dad was doing well.

Game really doesn't like rescuing his Dad after breaking his pact. I had similar.
My game was

Refuse to renew the pact
Then we went more or less straight to rescue the Duke
Then we had a couple of conversations in camp with Wyll and his Dad and went to find Ansur

Once we'd killed Ansur Wyll decided, pretty much out of nowhere, that he was the Blade of Avernus for some unknown reason.
Given he was no longer pacted it made little sense. He was standing by Ansur's corpse at the time, only him, Lae'zel and Astarion present.

He managed to stay that for about 30 seconds, which was as long as it took me to get to camp, then his Dad asked him to be Duke and he accepted that.
But the conversations made it very muddled and unclear which way he was going to go although Mizora pouted a bit that I'd made her look an idiot

Throughout it all Wyll's main conversation was wanting to make a beef stew and serve it with a pint of beer - which seemed weird to say the least - he seemed to mention it every time I spoke to him throughout the quest.

He only mentioned cooking dinner to me once, but I thought he wanted me to go and hunt some game. I'm not sure if there's any game to hunt in Rivington, but I had a look... and I guess he doesn't like the food at the Elfsong. Or the fact that I'm still serving up 3 week old camping rations every night grin

I don't think Mizora even commented on it at all for me. I suppose just complaining that I'd made her look like an idiot would be something, given that Wyll had nothing to do with the rescue and it only worked because Mizora wanted to showboat and rub it in Wyll's face.

I figure the Blade of Avernus stuff is Wyll's attempt to get revenge on Mizora and all devils. At the time he made that pledge he thought she'd killed his father to punish him, so it made sense in my game. Did he talk about becoming Grand Duke before then? I can't remember how it came up, but I remember telling him "You're not a politician, you're a hero," so that might also play into it.

For me his quest was messed up, when I went on the legendary quest first and went to save the Duke afterwards. It ended in repetitions and text triggering that probably shouldn't have triggered.
