For me its currently paved in fears that any given studio that might choose to pick up the torch might not be able to live up to the expectations, while I do feel like its way too early to give up like this it did also come with myriad of feelings that I no longer have to bother with.
Which were from the other side of the coin, that lets say a DLC they were working on got released, whether that delved into a specific companion is anyones guess or whether it was more general direction where all companions have a say in, that if it had been focused on one single companion what if it would make fans of the game want to have one released to their favorite?
Would be unrealistic to expect 12 DLC's, one for each companion.
Depending on the capabilities of the modding support and knowing whats been said it won't provide, I could have imagined seeing fan made campaigns with their own fictional head cannons realised for others to enjoy, but I doubt the capabilities the modding support entails would allow anyone to do that.
I saw four prominent and good potential expansions that we wil llikely never see get realized were as following, Menzoberranza prequel type of branching from early game, Vlaakith's temple that we could have had branched into from middle part of the game and the legendary dwarven tunnels below Cazadors temple that could have been a branch later parts of the game same as Avernus.
To put all of those aside I would love if there was some illustrations and concept arts realised into a thick book of what was planned for the game but never made it in for any given design reason, I would love to get hands on such tid bits of documentation, if it were on sale alongside their merchandise.-edit Oh and almost forgot to mention the possibilities of visiting Icewind Dale region, it is a really big shame we likely won't be able to have our big party of companions explore the more colder regions of the realm together, imagine how epic that would have been or even a possible standaloie DLC where we get to have .... spoilers!!
The Dark Urge pulling their cunning stunts into those colder regions of Canial, where we get to play and steal the crown of Karsus from the vaults of Mefistofeles homeground and have it end in a cliffhanger where he wound up betrayed by Orin the red later down that road.
