Currently there are 6 origin characters plus the durge. A player can also create a customer character.
While creating new companions would require a lot of voice acting and other content, adding origin character options might be an easier lift while adding options to increase replay ability. Any of the NPCs which are unlocked as a new origin would be removed from their respective place in the game, of course.
