I found this Geocache thing on the weekend, anyone know about it?
Geonotice
in this log
behind the pink ribbon
at this lake..
then we went, back to town
for a quick look... at the harbour..
and finally, to check out this notice about...
The World's Largest Burl....
It was such a nice weekend.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Wow - that is cool. Nice wood comes from Walnut Burl's. It makes awesome furniture for it's grain pattern. Walnut Burl
Weyerhaeuser supplies all the paper to the company i work for.

BTW - what was inside the Geocache container? Neat (and proably fun) idea.

[color:"orange"]A Burl is a wart-like excrescence growing on the roots, stems, or the branches of a tree.
Burls are not a disease, as trees may live with them for centuries. A burl is a result of a break in the cambium (growth) layer of the tree.
Instead of healing, the break sends out growth that forms the familiar burl shape.
Often the burl is filled with dormant buds that produce a "birds-eye" appearance.
Through the anomaly of burls,
many "plain" species of wood (e.g. redwood, box elder (Manitoba maple)) become much sought after in burl form. The wood of burls is often much harder than the normal wood of the tree. Burl wood is generally not strong, due to the swirling growth direction, which is further weakened by the many buds that usually develop within the burl. Due to instability of the wood, it is difficult to dry and process without much loss. Bark pockets are also sometimes present further reducing their usefulness. Despite these defects, burls are ever popular for turnings, novelties and furniture construction in the form of veneer.[/color]

as well as red/yellow cedar tables, end tables, clocks, etc. that can fetch $4-$5 hundred apiece.
more burl stuff.... Cathedral Grove park...you may recognize two particular tree shots, from the story
some nice pics <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Norway Burl bowl
Yellow/Red Cedarburls
burl descript now you could imagine how big the burl
would be on some trees here, that are 12m at the trunk and 250m high!
I've seen some burls, bigger than my coffee table burl and 4ft thick...
plus, i have a friend who "does burls" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

This is my burl table,
it came with 2 smaller end tables,
from my friend for 100 bucks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> SCooooP!! Thank you very much! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

@ lynn- <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

@ jurak- that's a really beautiful table. burl wood is all pretty. it's it that shiny because of the varnish, or is burl wood natually shinier?

It is like quarter cut oak...once you put the varnish on it, some parts are naturally shinier and pop out easier than other parts of the grain - does that make sence??? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I went to school for woodworking...:)
