Behind Gut's bedroom there is a chapel with a ladder leading to the Underdark.
As to the elevator - instead of going "left" you could had continued straight to the loading platform (with winch, IIRC) and jumped off - Feather Fall - to the right.
There again navigation is a bit tricky
I had a funny event there - I passed too close to the minotaurs and one of them killed himself jumping on me
