Hm, it's been a while since we had some pics, so here are.....
De broeltorensTwo "towers" at night -- effectively the medieval equivalent of a bunker. The one on the right dates back to at least 1302, since it was at that time part of the castle of Kortrijk, next to which the battle of 15 July 1302, the "Guldensporenslag", was fought; a battle that for the first time saw peasants and merchants, on foot, winning from a professional army (ie, with about 2000 knights [1] and stuff <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )... along with the magna carta another "demonstration" that true power was shifting to the cities, simply because their excellent economies gave them deeper pockets than the ones officially in control.
[1] To give a reference : at this time, the largest city in Europe was London, with a kick *ss 60000 inhabitants.
