Manneke Pis !

Yeah so I went to Brussels, sue me

Some more :

A parade that was freaking out the kids.
A comic wall, reportedly there are lots of them but I couldn't find too many

PS Obligatory old building (I think the tower on the right was added a bit later though).

The picture of the "old building" almost looks like it's roman. We have here in Cologne similar buildings, which are mostly more or less isolated remains of the town wall.

Thanks Janggut

I use an Ixus V3, it is small enough to take along all the time. The downside is it can be difficult to keep still, but I just take 10 pics of the same thing, hoping that at least one will look good

Nice camera Rat. Very good quality on your pictures. I have a brother/sister camera to yours, an A 80 and I've been amazed at how good digital cameras are now.

Many years ago I was a partner in a graphic design and photography business and we used to have to lug round bags full of gear to get a result. The first cheap digital I bought a few years ago was basically rubbish, but now they're fantastic! Light and versatile. They do a very good job as just a 'point and click' camera, like the old box brownie, or you do have the option to get fancy with the settings if you want. Very handy to be able to slip it in your pocket ready for use, and also to be able to download and edit on the computer too. Great fun.

I couldn't agree more Your story reminded me of the days of the first video cameras, about twenty years ago The camera itself was about as big and heavy as the stuff used today by professional TV crews (= really big), and to add insult you couldn't even record with it by itself. Instead you had cables running to what was basically a first-generation VCR + big *ss battery pack in a bag, so you were directly recording on VHS Totally killer, needless to say the whole setup weighted about 500 kg, would allow about 40 minutes of recording before the battery died, and the picture looked like crap

Ah the good old days when you could count the transistors on one hand

Btw nice features on the A80 I sometimes miss a Manual Focus on the V3.

Small Pictures of Cologne from a commercial site

It shows parts of the remains of the wall I mentioned. Unfortunately the pictures are not very good (fairly bad, I think).

Gotta love that old technology!

I had a big old radio in my workshop for years. It had valves rather than transistors and was so large that it stood on the floor as a piece of funiture. A huge speaker, so it sounded very good.

In my teenage years I also remember someone giving me an early recorder that used reels of thin wire instead of tape! I think it was from Grundig, or another German make of the time. It was beautifully made, although it was enormously heavy and needed some strength just to move it from table to table. Unfortunately, it didn't work when I was given it, and I never discovered the secret of fixing it.

A recorder with wire ?!?!? What the heck ??? Are you sure it was a recorder and not, say, a yoyo of a rather largish model ?

Hey Alrik, why don't you make and post a better picture ? It might get things back on topic Now I feel slightly retarded for not realising that Cologne is in fact Koln, aka Keulen. Omg.

Apparently in the early 50s wire recorders and tape recorders were both still being developed and refined at much the same time, and were competing directly in the marketplace.

The one I was given looked a little bit like this, except that it had wire on the spools (the one in this pic has tape). And of course the wire was nicely tangled by the time it was given to me.

@jurak: That is the "Colonius", our TV (communication) tower. Until five years ago there actually was a restaurant in it, but it is out of business now.

let me guess, scientist discovered beeing near to antennas could cause health problems, so nobody wanted to eat in the big antenna in fear of changing in to a mutant?

Dead wrong! Kölner (inhabitants of Cologne) aren't afraid of anything! Just think of Karneval...

It is just not profitable, so they haven't found a renter yet. Are you interested?
