If I recall correctly, a half-elf of the "high" variety gets to choose a racial cantrip. The default is fire bolt, which is useful for setting things on fire, but I recommend switching this to Friends, which is extremely helpful in dialogs. It will reduce your need for high charisma, and let you put more points in strength or dexterity for fighting.
And you will need one shovel.
