After the Emerald Grove Raid, Volo is trapped in a cage that I can't get him out of (in my camp, just before romance with Minthara). Is there any to get him out so I can finish his quest and get him to do his 'surgery' on me?

In case I wasn't clear, this is my first playthrough so no spoilers please

I'm not sure, never played the grove raid, but maybe let your party rogue lockpick the cage? If it is the same cage, you find him in a good playthrough, it should be pickable. Or try the spell Knock ( maybe respec Gale for that).

But maybe someone, who did the grove raid, can tell you more.

Short answer = not yet... Once you and a certain crazy drow (do the deed) / resolve your issues then you can get volo to pop your eye out
