I've also played as Gale and I remember having such a frustrating experience trying to get my companions to react to Elminster's statement. I spent so many hours trying different things to trigger it because I just want to see anything I can lol. Anyways yeah, it's a mess. I believe they might've said something about it in the patch 7 notes? But I might have been doing wishful thinking myself.
Have you seen the video on Gale's "Eager to die/Eager for crown" points? It's crazy how much stuff is bugged, I hope (but doubt) Larian fixes that as well.
