You can switch Sharpshooter on and off at any time in the passive skills or you can drag the skill from your skill list straight to your main bar. Equip doesn't really matter in Act 1, buy the 2 green crossbows from Dammon, that's the most important thing. Other than that, things you can wear. Things get more interesting in Act 2, as Crimsom has already given some good tips.
