I posted this video in another thread but I think it has couple points that could contribute to the discussion we were having:

11:10 - original concept for BG3 was a much larger game, which was scaled down as they got a better idea of the density of the game.

43:26 - "when fans are wrong" aka. Not responding to some feedback. Sven specifically addresses playerbased desire for BG3 continuing development.
