Hi all, continuing the BG3 birthday stats themed polls, what origins have you tried in the full release? As before, feel free to include any games you're currently playing, played up to end of act 1 or tried in honour mode but died before then.

If you've tried different ones, how did you feel that changed your experience of the game? Are there any particular origins you enjoyed? Did the experience of playing an origin character give you a different perspective on a character than having them as a party member?

I only played Tavs and Durges so far. I prefer to play my own characters, especially in DnD. That said, I might be trying one of the origins in the future.

Exclusively Dark Urge here, but will be playing Karlach after my initial Update #7 playthrough. Been wanting to play her forever, especially to see all of her voiced monologues.

I've only played Tav.

I'm not a fan of Durge's story (From what I gather from hearing about it) and I simply don't like playing Origin characters (I never played one in DoS2 either).

To me, the slight change in perspective from companion to PC is simply not enough to make an Origin character particularly interesting as a choice.

Like, I don't mind pre-made characters, just... When like 90% of their content can be experienced via having said characters as a companion, it's not very compelling.

I've tried all.
I completed game as Tav.
I got to BG with Karlach, Astarion, Shadowheart, am about to do so with Wyll.
I blew myself up at the Colony.
Lae'zel will be the "all Git Gits" playthough (I've only dabbled with her, reaching lvl 4 or so)
I tried Durge and discovered that I have to murder pretty girls to progress, so pass, Imma not interested. This is the only PC I never took out of Act 1, all others get the vote.

Woops. I should have selected Tav as well as Gale. I haven't quite completed my Gale run, but nothing has radically changed my perceptions of him so far, but there are nice tidbits of extra characterization here and there. I've really enjoyed the extra Tara content. Her conversations strike a nice balance of funny and heartwarming. If I take control of a different character and try to talk to her in camp, she says, "Erm. Meow." in the most unimpressed, "I don't have time for this" tone imaginable.

I have noticed that playing as an established character encourages me to roleplay in ways I probably wouldn't if I was playing another Tav.

It may be my ears playing games with me, but I have the impression that Tara purrs when scritched by Gale (the first time).

When playing Origins I roleplay a bit - Lae'zel and Shadowheart are calluous heartless Evil bitches, Astarion is a Chaotic Evil cunt, Karlach is Good but with a weak spot for criminals due to her knee-breaking past as gang enforcer, Wyll is a pompuous artistocratic well intentioned idiot - destinied to be murdered by his fellow revolutionaries, Gale is GOOD.

Tara purrs, or my ears are playing tricks on me as well. =) Astarion, Gale and currently hopping about with Shadowheart. I want to do another Gale run in the next patch, hoping that maybe the bugs in his personal quest will have been fixed then.

What I enjoyed most about Gale's journey - apart from dear Tara - was how it turned Astarion into a skilled tempter. The moment when he wants to encourage you to take over the cult has no real incentive for other characters. Aside from a possible power grab, it's just an expression of Astarion's thinly veiled desire to keep the tadpole that grants him freedome. When directed at Gale, the idea to take hold of the Absolute directly contradicts Mystra's command and offers you a possible alternative to imminent death. Astarion's whole spiel of seducing himself a powerful ally becomes a good deal more complex and sinister in a scenario, where it simultaneously motivates his target to not find purpose in self-sacrifice. Definitely not a healthy romance but I loved it. =D

Edit: And Astarion-Origin is just my favourite way to play the game. I may or may not drink Lae'zel dry when she suggets controlling the tadpole isn't an option.

Edit 2: I started Durge, but didn't really like it so I never finished the run. Too much gore, too little horror.

I play Dark Urge only. If I have the time, I will definitely look at the evil endings of other origins, even if I will certainly miss my Durge and its story. smirk

Tav, followed by Gale, dark urge, and now Wyll. The only one I disliked was dark urge.

Many Tavs of different race and classes.

2 durges.
First "unchained durge" played to the end.
Second, I started on a max-evil Bhaal urge (cutting off Gale's hand, smashing Alfira'sLute, getting Arabella bit etc...) Made it to halfway Act 2 and then abandoned, it was too much

Origins : Karlach, but I had some kind of bug/crash that invalidated the save (had been messing with mods also) , so I didn't finish it. Playing a prefit character doesn't really appeal to me. Karlach, and maybe Lae'zel are the only ones that I might try again. They seem to "resonate" somehow with my own fictional character-prototype.

In the last two PT's I also deployed a mod to add custom hirelings and that boosted the playing fun for me quite a lot. Tav can't really interact with them, but the hirelings can interact with the game NPC's. That's good enough for me to get a bit of an extra TT party experience.

Hey friends, just popping in with a reminder that we have a rule against extreme and excessive language. Of course, language is always open to interpretation but be mindful that swearing never wins you points with the mod team. (Unless it’s really funny)

Tav, Asterion (unfinished), Shadowheart (unfinished) and another Tav also unfinished. I've been waiting on my next playthrough, I'll do an Honour Mode run, but I can't quite decide who as yet.

As far as I'm aware, the player character doesn't speak. Regardless of it being Tav or an origin character. You'll only ever hear banter.

I played my first game as Wyll. This was a perfect origin character to play though when learning the game.

I have also completed the game as a durge character, and an honor mode run with a custom TAV character.

After I get bored of experimenting with Mods, I will try playing through as Gale next.

Custom "Tav" only. Since I play only male characters, my choices would be limited to Gale, Wyll and Astarion and neither of them is appealing to me for one reason or another (mostly their classes). Yes, I could technically respec their class to a class I actually enjoy to play, but playing Gale or Wyll as a fighter, paladin, ranger, monk or barbarian would feel strange as far as their origin is concerned.

Also, I prefer to play my own characters in RPGs. This does, in fact, extend to companions as well... if we could create multiple characters without having to rely on a workaround, I'd do that in heartbeat.

Played mostly Tav. Did an Astarion run which helped me RP a bit differently. Played Astarion as more of a cad with an effyew attitude rather than evil but still quite a departure from my goody-two-shoes, please everyone tendencies when I played Tav. The Cad routine went surprisingly well. Shadowheart was sporting about it and Laezel was nuts for it. With the Save-Alfira Mod, I finally played Dark Urge. Can report that Dark Urge is very playable for seeing more story even if you want to stay good, assuming you use that mod. Saddest thing I've seen in the game was save-scumming to see what happens if Astarion ends a relationship with Laezel. I'm not crying, you're crying!
