I was running the latest patch of BG3 on GoG before version 1.7 came out. Now that 1.7 is out, it wants me to download 124.68 GB - pretty sure that's the size of the whole game.

At https://baldursgate3.game/news/patch-7-now-live_121, it says that the patch is 11.6 GB on PC - much smaller than the 124.68 GB that I apparently have to download.

Is GoG not capable of patching the already installed game? What are other peoples' experience with updating on GoG? Anything I can do to avoid as 124.68 GB download every time a patch comes out?

Are you reading the numbers right? It may be that 124 GB refers to the files to be modified, not the download itself.
I use Steam and I had a 11,5 GB download and 141 GB of files to modify.

yes 124Gb is the patch... a fresh install will take an extra 5G and is normally worth doing over a 'patch' for Larian games but always keep the old folder when you uninstall so your Larian account details are saved/ don't need resigning in

yes Larian says their patch is only X but they are talking about Steam only when they post those numbers... yes its always been that way
yes Gog is very capable of unpacking a patch file the same as Steam but someone has to do the work and thats only worth it for their Steam customers... in other words yes Steam customers get a better deal both in effort and actual money spent but to be fair Gog customers only pay a few extra $% over Steam so its mostly just putting up with less dev time spent on actual 'working' features

That issue is not gog only. I have the steam version and it has also redownloaded the entire game while patching. This was an unmodded install, so it was not caused by mods.
