In the Lord of the Rings, the term "shire" should've been translated into "Gau", as a correct German term of similar meaning, but since the Nazis used this word very much, people don't use it (like most terms widely used by the Nazis). So the German translation bevame "Auenland" for the "Shire" where he Hobbits live in. An "au" is the area left and right of a river, usually with many plants (especially with smaller rivers).
