A hint of a possible action is in the book that lies on Balthazar's corpse. But for some reason, Gale is not even offered such a super obvious choice in the Tower of Ramazit during the dialogue with Lorokan.

Besides, there are canonically ways to stay alive longer in DnD - Elminster is an example as well as Volo and Jaheira contemplating a ritual.
